Originally settled by German immigrants, the early Dutchtown residents earned a reputation for being almost obsessively clean. Families in this St. Louis neighborhood were known far and wide for keeping their sidewalks spotless, even getting down on their hands and knees to give the concrete a good scrubbing. It's safe to say that these homeowners and renters truly earned the affectionate nickname of the "Scrubby Dutch."

Dutchtown also is the birthplace of Richard Gephardt, a multi-term U.S. Congressman who made two unsuccessful bids for the White House. Renting a Dutchtown apartment means taking advantage of the native cuisine offered at Bosnian coffee shops, restaurants and bakeries operating in the area.

Living in Dutchtown is like living on a cultural launching pad. As long-established families moved out of the area towards St. Louis County, the Dutchtown neighborhood benefitted from an infusion of new residents, who brought a taste of Europe to these old Scrubby Dutch streets.

Ideally suited for young people looking for their first apartments, most Dutchtown apartments are conveniently located to several major bus lines and offers easy access to Metrolink, the local light rail system.
